Britain’s Best Surprise. Browse these pages for all you need to plan your next visit.
Northamptonshire, Britain’s best kept secret, will be a secret no more. With the best historic houses in the country as well as a huge array of other surprising assets, this website showcases the county's biggest ever campaign to attract visitors.
So why is Northamptonshire Britain’s Best Surprise? The county boasts stunning countryside, with country parks, world class gardens, the Nene and Welland rivers as well as the Grand Union canal. Here, you can find the most magnificent historic houses in the country, alongside beautiful Anglo Saxon, Norman & Gothic churches. History was made here; it's the birth place of Richard III, the scene of Mary Queen of Scot’s execution, the cradle of The Gunpowder Plot and the the place of Charles I’s imprisonment, as well as the Civil War battle that put him there, Naseby.
But most surprisingly, amongst all this beauty and history sits a very 21st century county. Northamptonshire is the place where 80% of the world’s F1 cars are built and the Grand Prix is held, where some of the country’s best artisan food and drink is made, and where the award winning Royal & Derngate produces some of the country’s best theatre. We're even the inspiration for the international hit film and musical, Kinky Boots, through our history of making high quality shoes.
As you experience all of this, you can stay in luxurious 16th century hotels and enchanting B&Bs whilst enjoying a range of established food and literary festivals at Althorp, the Nene Valley Festival and Oundle Music Festival or enjoying exciting sport at Silverstone, The Saints and The Cobblers.
Getting here is easy, we’re just one hour from London, Birmingham, Oxford and Cambridge.
